Africa Remix Dance

In the past couple of years, a new type of music and sounds has made an appearance in the music world – Africa remix music. An African remix exhibit traveled around the world last year, hitting major cities like London and Paris, and it included exhibits in contemporary music, art, photography, and other artistic mediums. It was said to be the largest collection of African art ever assembled in Europe. Some of the musicians that played the exhibit were veterans of the African music world, and some were up-and-comers.

The sounds of traditional African music vary widely depending on the location; there are many different nations and ethnicities across the continent, and the music reflects that diversity. Tonal singing and drums are major parts of traditional music, and a Western influence has been showing up more and more.

Africa remix music takes the traditional sounds of Africa and blends them with contemporary music, particularly European music. Synthesizers and electric guitars bring contemporary sounds into the traditional music, and the styles of rock, hip hop, and 80’s punk are heard. As traditional African music is closely tied with traditional dance, the hip hop and rock used in Africa remix music don’t seem so out of place. The sound is ultra-modern and revolutionary, and although it contrasts with the traditional sound, it also seems to fit it. Traditional African music shaped jazz and blues, and to a lesser extent rock. And since a variety of music arose out of rock, it stands to reason that Africa remix music is simply going back to its roots.
